Diesel Mechanic (SAQA QUAL ID: 117237)

The Occupational Certificate: Diesel Mechanic equips learners with the essential skills and knowledge to maintain and repair diesel engines and vehicles, primarily within the transport, construction, and mining industries. Learners will gain a solid understanding of diesel engine systems, diagnostics, and maintenance, ensuring adherence to safety regulations and industry standards.

Purpose:

This qualification is designed to develop professionals in the field of diesel mechanics, enabling them to maintain, repair, and overhaul diesel engines and related systems. It covers the full range of tasks including troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of diesel-powered vehicles and machinery. With a total of 540 credits at NQF Level 4, this qualification ensures learners are prepared for a wide range of tasks in industries requiring diesel engine maintenance and repair.


Entry Requirements:

• Minimum Grade 9 (NQF Level 1) or equivalent.
• Mathematics and Physical Science recommended.
• Must be physically fit and comfortable working with machinery, tools, and engines.
• Basic English communication skills.


Qualification Structure 
The qualification has three main components:

1. 📘 Knowledge Modules (Theoretical Training):

Covers the academic and conceptual background required to be a competent diesel mechanic:

• Basics of diesel engines and fuel systems
• Mechanical components (gears, pumps, bearings, etc.)
• Electrical and electronic systems in vehicles
• Hydraulics and pneumatics
• Cooling and lubrication systems
• Fault diagnosis techniques
• Workshop safety and environmental procedures
• Occupational health and safety (OHS Act)

 

2. 🛠️ Practical Skills Modules (Workshop Training):
Hands-on training in technical skills, including:

• Stripping, assembling, and testing diesel engines
• Servicing and repairing gearboxes, brakes, steering, and suspension
• Diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults
• Using diagnostic tools and instruments
• Servicing fuel systems and turbochargers
• Performing preventative maintenance
• Welding and basic fabrication related to mechanical repair
• Interpreting job cards and workshop manuals


3. 🏭 Workplace Experience Modules:
Learners must complete structured on-the-job training in a real-world mechanical workshop or transport/fleet environment:

• Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance
• Identify and report defects
• Work with diesel-powered vehicles, trucks, buses, or machinery
• Maintain service records and job cards
• Communicate effectively with supervisors and colleague


EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES:
Qualified individuals will be able to:
Upon completing the qualification, learners will be able to:

1. Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
2. Interpret workshop manuals, technical specifications, and job instructions.
3. Use appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment to identify and fix faults.
4. Service and overhaul diesel engines, transmissions, and related systems.
5. Work in compliance with industry safety standards, environmental requirements, and regulations.
6. Communicate effectively and work as part of a team in a workshop setting.


External Summative Assessment (EISA): 

• Conducted by the National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB).
• Final assessment includes theory and practical demonstration.
• Successful candidates are awarded the Occupational Certificate: Diesel Mechanic.
• May also qualify for a Red Seal (Artisan Recognition) after trade testing.
