Systems Support is a qualification registered within the Occupational Qualifications Sub-framework (OQSF) to equip learners with essential skills in IT systems and network support. This qualification prepares individuals to troubleshoot, install, and maintain IT systems, enhancing business efficiency through technology.
Purpose:
The qualification aims to develop skilled IT professionals with practical competencies that meet industry standards. It addresses a skills gap in the field of systems support, crucial for sectors such as business, telecommunications, and government services. Additionally, it supports national economic growth by enabling skilled IT practitioners to enter the job market with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience.
Entry Requirements:
• Grade 11 (NQF Level 3) or equivalent
• Basic computer literacy is recommended
• Must be able to communicate in English (written & spoken)
• Strong interest in technology and problem-solving
Qualification Structure
This qualification includes Unit Standards grouped into 4 categories:
1.
Fundamental Component
• Communication in English at NQF Level 4
• Second language communication at NQF Level 3
2.
Core Component
(IT System Support knowledge and skills) Includes key unit standards like:
• Describe and install computer hardware components
• Demonstrate knowledge of operating systems (Windows/Linux)
• Install and troubleshoot software applications
• Set up and maintain computer networks (LAN, wireless)
• Perform routine IT support tasks
• Understand IT security and data protection
• Support and maintain peripheral devices (printers, routers, scanners)
3.
Elective Component
Examples include:
• Install and configure an email client
• Provide technical support for end users
• Set up remote access
• Understand basic programming and scripting
• Manage storage devices and backups

Workplace Experience
• Log and resolve helpdesk tickets
• Configure and troubleshoot desktops
• Install operating systems and updates
• Practice supporting users in a live IT environment
