PLUMBING(SAQA QUAL ID 91782)

Plumber is a qualification registered within the Occupational Qualifications Sub-Framework (OQSF) to equip learners with essential skills in the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of plumbing systems. This qualification prepares individuals to work as professional plumbers, ensuring safe water supply, effective wastewater management, and compliance with building and safety regulations.

Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to develop competent plumbers who can contribute to public health, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure development by providing reliable plumbing services. It aims to professionalise the plumbing trade, improve service quality, and create career pathways within the construction and engineering sectors.

Entry Requirements:

• Grade 9 certificate or NQF Level 1 equivalent (minimum).
• Must be medically fit and able to work in confined spaces or at heights.
• Basic numeracy and communication skills recommended.


Qualification Components: 
The qualification comprises three primary components:
1. 📘 Knowledge Modules (Theoretical Training):
These cover the theory and understanding behind plumbing work:

• Plumbing science and principles
• Water supply systems and sanitation
• Drainage systems and wastewater
• Building and plumbing regulations (e.g. SANS codes)
• Environmental practices in plumbing
• Occupational health and safety
• Reading and interpreting building plans and specifications
• Introduction to solar and heat pump systems  

2. 🛠️ Practical Skills Modules (Workshop-Based Training): 
Learners acquire technical plumbing skills such as:

• Installing water supply and drainage systems
• Laying and connecting pipes
• Installing geysers, sanitary fixtures, taps, valves, and cisterns
• Pressure testing and fault finding
• Working with copper, PVC, HDPE, and galvanized pipes
• Cutting, bending, threading, joining, soldering, and sealing
• Installing stormwater systems

3. 🏢 Workplace Experience Modules (On-Site Training):

• Supervised training in a real work environment
• Application of skills in residential, commercial, and industrial settings
• Maintenance, repairs, and inspections
• Exposure to projects involving water-saving systems and sustainable plumbing

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES:
Qualified individuals will be able to:

At the end of the qualification, a learner will be able to:

1. Plan, prepare and install domestic, industrial, or commercial plumbing systems.
2. Interpret technical drawings and plan work accordingly.
3. Select appropriate materials, tools, and equipment for plumbing tasks.
4. Install, maintain, and repair water supply and drainage systems safely and effectively.
5. Test and commission plumbing systems in compliance with industry standards.
6. Apply relevant codes and regulations (e.g. SANS 10252, SANS 10254).
7. Maintain a safe, clean, and environmentally responsible worksite.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

The qualification requires an external integrated summative assessment conducted by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). This final assessment focuses on evaluating the learners' proficiency in both theoretical and practical components as outlined in the exit level outcomes.
